RED YEAST WARNING
Some people take a form of ?€?red yeast extract?€? to lower their cholesterol. If you know of someone who is taking the red yeast supplements marketed as Red Yeast Rice, Red Yeast Rice Complex and Cholestrix, you should be aware that these nonprescription supplements have been found to have lovastatin in them, which is a prescription drug. The products are manufactured by Nature?€™s Value Inc, Kabco Inc, and Sunburst Biorganics, respectively, and sold over the Internet by the manufacturers, or in the case of Red Yeast Rice, by Swanson Healthcare Products. The lovastatin is not named in the list of the product ingredients on the bottle. You will have to get tested to know whether it has affected you or not. Lovastatin can cause severe muscle problems leading to kidney impairment, so please make sure to get checked out if you have been taking these supplements.
